‘I Hope COMELEC will Listen to Youth,’ says Ex-SC Justice Carpio

By Kirby Marquez

1Sambayan chairperson and former Justice Secretary Antonio Carpio, said that the request of the youth for an extension of the registration period is very compelling, in a press conference via zoom on August 18. According to him, they still need 12 million voters enough to determine who will be the next president.

However, as of August 18, 2021, COMELEC decided against extending voter registration beyond September 30, 2021.

“We lost five and a half months because of the pandemic; all the youth are asking is to extend the registration for just 1 month”. Former justice sec. Carpio said.

According to Carpio, as per the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), there should be 73 million qualified voters; the COMELEC admits to having about 61 million registered voters.

Meanwhile, 1Sambayan National Conveyor Rae Reposar, stated that there is justifiable reason to extend the registration period for 2022 elections.

“The most important role of the youth other than voting and registering, is to empower the youth to actively participate”. He spoke.

1Sambayan youth plans to build other chapters in different institutions to gain more strength in fighting for democracy.
