The Philippine Red Cross has reported that blood donations have fallen by 29% in 2020. Today we continue to have a shortage of supply due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To help address this, the UP Pre-Medical Society and UP Red Cross Youth worked together with Philippine Red Cross to hold the Kapatid Blood Donation Drive last January 14, 2023. Filipinos of all ages and backgrounds came together to donate blood and help our fellow Filipino in need. With the help of our donors and volunteers, we were able to reach our goal and collect over 60 bags of blood!
Students, passer-bys, staff, and whole families took the time to donate their blood. Varsity athletes from UP Men’s Football and UP Softball Teams visited to support the event and undergo the bloodletting process. Donors went through registration and check-up to ensure that they were eligible to donate. Successful donors went home with a bag of goodies, snacks, water, and the knowledge that they were able to help someone in need.
The collected blood will go to patients with severe blood loss, leukemia, or hemophilia, mothers with birth complications, trauma patients, patients in need of transplants, and many more. Each bag of blood can help up to 3 people in need!
